Celebrate an important piece of Hattiesburg history with Smith Drug Co. Established in 1925 by pharmacist E. Hammond Smith, the neighborhood drugstore became a cornerstone of Mobile Street’s thriving African American commercial district. Its popular soda fountain drew generations of local residents and students from nearby Eureka High School.
Smith Drug also played a role in Hattiesburg’s Civil Rights Movement, serving as a gathering place for local leaders and visiting activists. After more than 70 years of service, the business closed in 1996, and the historic building was later restored as part of the Sixth Street Museum District.
Created from an original photograp with hand-rendered techniques, this mixed-media artwork highlights the architectural character of the building—from its grand classical façade to the distinctive CITY HALL inscription above the entrance.
Enjoy your favorite coffee or tea while celebrating a landmark at the heart of Hattiesburg and the community it continues to serve.
